Things to Think About When Selecting a Lathe Machine

A lathe machine is a simple device used to hold a section of material shaped, cut, or carved. There are various lathe designs for various materials. This means that lathes are designed specifically for woodworking and lathes designed specifically for metalworking.

Traditional metalworking and woodworking lathes can both rotate your workpiece instead of holding it stationary like a vice. A lathe's cutting tool remains stationary while your workpiece rotates, whereas milling machines keep workpieces stationary while the cutting tool rotates. You're on the right track if you're certain you need lathes over vertical machining centers for milling.

What precisely is a lathe?

A lathe is a type of machining tool that is primarily used to shape metal or wood. The workpiece is rotated around a stationary cutting tool. The primary application removes unwanted parts of the material, leaving a nicely shaped workpiece behind.

There are numerous lathes, each specialized for a specific material or technique. We have four different lathes at All Metals Fabricating, including one with live tooling capabilities for multitasking jobs. Lathes have been used to create parts for other machinery and specialty items such as bowls and musical instruments.

Lathe Components

The bed, headstock, tailstock, spindles, toolrest, and motor are the main components. This is how it works:

Everything is held together by the bed.

All of the lathe's components are secured to the bed. This serves as the lathe's foundation and is one of the factors determining the piece's size. The maximum diameter limit is determined by the distance between the main spindle and the bed.

Correct Orientation

The headstock should be to the left and the tailstock to the right. Check to make sure you're not standing on the wrong side of the lathe if you see the opposite.

The main action takes place on the headstock. This is the point at which the motor's power is applied to the workpiece. Its purpose includes holding the main spindle, so you should see this spindle as well. The motor is located on the underside of the lathe bed, near the headstock on the left. It is usually an electric motor, but a lathe can also have a hydraulic motor.

Types of Lathe Machines

Metal Shaping and Woodworking Industrial Lathe Machines

The lathe, also known as the "mother of all machine tools," is one of the most common machines in almost any machine shop or manufacturing facility. It works by spinning apart at high speed and removing material from the object with cutting tools.

Lathes with High Precision

This Birmingham Precision Gear Head Lathe is 12" x 36" in size and comes with an inclining spindle, 9 spindle speeds ranging from 70-1400ppm, and a jog button for easy operation. In addition to metric and imperial units, the larger 14-inch by 40-inch Birmingham Precision Gear Head Lathe features diametric and module cutting threads.

This GMC HIGH-SPEED PRECISION ENGINE LATHE uses the SINO digital readout and taper attachment. You can also choose the 3-Phase High-Speed Precision Engine Lathe, which measures 14" x 40" and has 3 horsepower and 220 vaults if you want more control over the power of your machining equipment.

Lathes and Stands for Bench Lathes

A Baleigh Variable Speed Bench Top Lathe provides exceptional usability in a sturdy, yet compact frame, making it ideal for small machine shops. Another outstanding hobby lathe is this JET Belt Drive Benchtop Lathe, built with precision-tapered roller bearings for smooth operation.

Finally, this JET Cabinet Stand is ideal for measuring 13" x 40" bench machines. Its all-steel construction ensures a strong foundation for your projects, while the lockable, hinged doors allow for easy, secure access to your materials.
